Quiet season at Lake Hallstatt: Advent, Krampus & thermal baths

When the November mist settles over Lake Hallstatt and things grow quieter, the inner Salzkammergut shows its most peaceful side. Advent brings lights, punch and old traditions – and from Villa Salzweg, the loveliest Advent markets in the region are all close by.

Wolfgangsee Advent

From 20 November to 20 December 2026, St. Wolfgang, Strobl and St. Gilgen become an Advent by the lake. In St. Wolfgang, more than 70 life-size nativity figures are spread around the village, and the 16-metre floating Peace Lantern shines off the shore. Strobl turns into a nativity village, with a shepherds' path leading you to the market. In St. Gilgen, the story of St. Nicholas is performed on the church square.

The Advent boat shuttles between the three villages. The markets are open Wednesday to Sunday, and entry is free. Strobl is about 25 minutes from the villa.

Gosau mountain Christmas market

The "Gosauer Bergweihnacht" opens on just two Advent weekends in the grounds of the Gosau local heritage museum: 28/29 November and 5/6 December 2026. Expect wooden huts among tall trees, Gosau home cooking, carriage and horse-drawn sleigh rides, donkey rides and a Christmas workshop for children. Entry is free, and a free shuttle runs every 20 minutes. On site it's cash only. Gosau is about 25 minutes away.

Bad Ischl and Hallstatt

At the Christmas market in Bad Ischl's Trinkhalle, local craftspeople sell handmade gifts (20 November to 20 December 2026, Wednesday to Sunday). A slice of Zaunerstollen at the famous Zauner patisserie is part of the visit. Bad Ischl is only 12 minutes from the villa.

Hallstatt holds its Christmas market on a single day only: 8 December on the market square. There's a nativity scene made by the Hallstatt woodworking school, smoked fish from the region and Christmas music. Our tip: go by train. The station is an 8-minute walk from the villa, and from there the boat takes you across.

Advent in Bad Goisern

On 7 December the market square belongs to the Salzkammergut Krampus run. Advent brass music starts at 4 p.m., the children's Krampus run is at 6 p.m. and the big parade at 7 p.m. – loud, dark and impressive. On 12 December 2026 comes the Goiserer Adventroas, with crafts, music and punch, alongside the Meister-Advent at the Hand.Werk.Haus. Both are about a 10-minute walk from the villa.

And afterwards: warmth

After a chilly day at the markets, the EurothermenResort in Bad Ischl is about 15 minutes away. Or simply take a misty walk along the Traun, when the valley is completely still.
