From beginner to pro

Many of the via ferrata are doable for beginners too — given a bit of stamina. If you want more: the long, panoramic tours at the Gosaukamm and Dachstein are among the most impressive in the Eastern Alps.

Which via ferrata suits you?

Via ferratas in Austria use a unified difficulty scale — a quick overview: A · easy for beginners, plenty of handholds and steps. B · moderate, short demanding sections, good resting points. C · difficult, steep and vertical passages with small holds.

D · very difficult, exposed and strenuous, hardly any resting points. E · extreme, overhanging sections without rests — only for very experienced climbers. In the Goisern area many routes start at A/B; the more demanding C/D tours are at the Gosaukamm and Donnerkogel.

Plan B in the rain

When the rock gets wet: the climbing gym in Bad Ischl is 15 min away. 1,200 m², over 90 routes, dedicated bouldering area. Gear rental on site, day pass under €20.

Also practical for an acclimatisation day right after arrival — getting hands and feet back into climbing before you hit the real rock.
