Skiing, ski touring & sledding

We don't have any loud après-ski hotspots here. What we do have: family-friendly ski areas, well-groomed slopes, open powder fields for the freeriders, ski tours at every grade, cross-country tracks (snow permitting — the Predigtstuhl high-altitude track is the most reliable) and a toboggan run with a hut at the end. Slow-paced winter sports — not marketing, just the way it is.

Tips & recommendations

Skiing

Skiregion Dachstein West

160 piste-kilometres in the joint pass with views of the Dachstein glacier.

22 min by car (19 km)

A family-friendly ski area that stretches along the Dachstein, again and again offering beautiful views of the easternmost glacier in the Alps. In the Dachstein West joint pass you have 160 piste-kilometres in total. Near the Hornspitz cable car in Gosau you also find the free "Brumsiland", which offers a great ski experience for small children with three magic carpets. If you don't bring your own skis, you can rent them at the rental shop at the Hornspitz cable car.

Brumsiland Gosau

Free ski land for the very youngest — three magic carpets right at the Hornspitz base station.

21 min by car (19 km)

Brumsi the ski bumblebee shows the way: across the magic carpet, the Brumsi boardercross and through the wild slalom flight between the fairytale figures, kids speed past their parents and back to the start. In Brumsiland directly at the base station of the Hornspitz cable car in Gosau, even the smallest skier learns lovely turns — the friendly ski-school instructors and Brumsi are always there to help. Parents can proudly watch the kids' rapid progress over a cup of coffee.

Skiresort Loser

Small, charming, snow-sure — 34 piste-kilometres from 800 to 1,800 m.

25 min by car (22 km)

The small and charming, snow-sure ski area on the imposing Loser mountain covers 34 piste-kilometres from 800 to 1,800 m. The area also offers cross-country skiing at the Blaa-Alm or sledding down the Loser Panoramastraße. Special lift tickets for sledders and hikers are available at the lift ticket office.

Dachstein Krippenstein

Freeriders' mecca with Austria's longest descent (11 km).

24 min by car (17 km)

Among freeriders, the Dachstein Krippenstein ski region with its Freesport arena is especially popular. But the Freesport arena also has appeal for skiers who prefer prepared pistes. With easy runs for warming up and learning to ski, and the challenging and longest descent in Austria at 11 km, there's something for every skier. Winter hiking, snowshoeing and ski touring options on the Dachstein plateau round off the offer.

Sledding & cross-country

Trockentannrodelbahn

Lit toboggan run with a hut up top — 40 min ascent, sleds free at the parking lot.

4 min by car (2 km)

Not far from Villa Salzweg sits the lovely Trockentann toboggan run. In the winter months it's hugely popular — sledders flock to Bad Goisern for a fun toboggan ride.

After a roughly 40-minute walk up with 300 metres of elevation gain, you reach the cosy toboggan hut, which is open daily in the winter months when there's good snow. In the evening you can use either the lit toboggan run or the ascent track with a headlamp. Sleds can be borrowed for free next to the parking lot.

Langlaufloipen rund um Bad Goisern

Snow permitting — most reliable is the Predigtstuhl high-altitude track, plus tracks in Gosau and St. Agatha.

Cross-country skiing is popular in Bad Goisern, but heavily snow-dependent: the valley tracks in the village are only groomed when there’s enough snow — in mild winters often not at all. Most reliable is the Predigtstuhl high-altitude track (Wurmstein, at about 900 m), which thanks to its altitude is groomed most of the season.

Other good options in the region: tracks in Gosau, in the Echerntal near Hallstatt and the St. Agatha high-altitude track. Ask us at check-in for the current track conditions.

Ski touring & snowshoeing

Skitouren-Klassiker

Hütteneck, Loserhütte and Goisererhütte — reliable tours for intermediate level.

In Bad Goisern and the surrounding area there are countless options for ski tours of all difficulty levels and with the most varied descent options. Recommended are the relatively easy tours into the Hütteneck, to the Loserhütte or to the Goisererhütte via Gosau.

Ski bus & lift passes

From the Goisern Mitte stop (Bahnhofsallee, 8 min from the villa) the ski bus runs to the Dachstein West base station — free with the guest card. Day pass from about €56.

Krippenstein is included in the Dachstein West joint pass — same ticket as Gosau. The Loser, by contrast, is a stand-alone ski area with its own ticket (no joint pass). Ask us at check-in for current rates.

What we lend for free — and what we don’t

In our ski and bike room: four pairs of snowshoes in universal size (won’t fit children’s feet).

Toboggan sleds are available right at the Trockentann run by the parking lot — free to borrow on site, not from us. Headlamps for the lit evening run: please bring your own — we don’t stock them.
